Location: On The Common, 18 Washington Square West, Salem
County: Essex
Property Type: Hotel
Haunting Activity: The land upon which the Hawthorne was built was once part of Salem Common, site of the dreadful Salem Witch Trials of the 1690s. It's thought by many that the negative energy created at that time remains in the land, influencing the entire town of Salem. No one ghost is given credit for paranormal events at the Hawthorne because of this.
Activity Reported By: Employees and guests.
History: In the 1920s, the citizens of Salem established an unusual public subscription drive to build "Salem's own hotel to meet the needs of Salem, its guests and visitors…." The Hawthorne, named for author Nathaniel Hawthorne, was completed in 1925 and contains 89 rooms and 6 suites.
