Lafitte Guest House

Location: 1003 Bourbon Street, New Orleans

County: Orleans

Property Type: Inn

Haunting Activity: Several spirits abide in this former private home now an inn, and two of them may be the children of one of the previous owners. People sometimes report hearing a baby cry or seeing the apparition of a young girl, who may be the ghost of one of the Gleises daughters that died in a yellow-fever epidemic at the age of 8 or 10. Guests report the most activity in suites 21 and 22, where things go on and off and beds move of their own accord. One guest reported meeting the anguished spirit of a woman who had lost her daughter to yellow fever in suite 21.

Activity Reported By: Property owners and guests

History: The land on which the house sits was initially given to Charity Hospital by the King of Spain in 1793. After the hospital burned down in 1809, a wood and brick single family dwelling of modest proportions was constructed on the site. The property went through several owners before construction on the existing house was started in 1848 and finished in 1849. The home was built for Paul Joseph Gleises and his wife Marie Odalie Ducayet, and the original cost of the dwelling was a whooping $11,700.00, quite a hefty price in 1849 for a single family dwelling. The brass and crystal chandelier in the entryway is the only chandelier original to the mansion. There are three original fireplaces. The other mantelpieces were collected from other New Orleans' homes, refinished and installed into the rooms.
