Location: 919 Royal Street, New Orleans
County: Orleans
Property Type: Hotel
Haunting Activity: At least three different spirits share this hotel with the living. One is a Confederate soldier, while another is his mistress. The third spirit may be a bit confused. What were once the poker parlors are now restrooms, and one formally dressed spirit is ocassionally seen in the men's room. Some sixth-floor guest have reported seeing the faces of African American children peering in the windows. The Sisters of the Holy Family convent did occasionally take in orphans, so it's thought some of these children may have remained.
Activity Reported By: Employees and guests.
History: John Davis opened the famed Orleans Ballroom in 1817. Site of some of New Orleans' most elite Quadroon Balls, it fell into disrepair after the Civil War. In 1881, the Sisters of the Holy Family, an order of African American nuns devoted to teaching, acquired the property for a motherhood and school. It remained a convent for the next 83 years, but in 1964, the Sisters, pressed by a need for expanded facilities, sold the property to hotel interests. New additions would replace some of the structure built by the nuns but the Orleans Ballroom would remain and begin a life more closely attuned to its opulent beginnings.
