Liberty Hall

Location: 218 Wilkinson Street, Frankfort

County: Franklin

Property Type: Historic Home

Haunting Activity: The "Gray Lady" is the most famous spirit thought to inhabit Liberty Hall. Legend has it she is Mrs. Margaret Varick, the elderly aunt of Mrs. Brown. Mrs. Varick traveled to Liberty Hall after the death of the Browns' 7-year-old daughter from mercury poisoning died of a heart attack only three days after her arrival. She's frequently seen doing chores about the house and is often credited with locating lost objects. Her ghost was first reported by the family over 150 years ago, and she was photographed on the stairs in the 1970's.

Two other spirits are occasionally seen on the grounds of Liberty Hall. In 1805, a beautiful Spanish opera singer traveled from New Orleans to perform in Frankfort. While attending a party at Liberty Hall, she went outside to walk about the grounds. She was never seen again, but her ghost is said to run through the gardens, mouth open as if screaming in horror, on hot, humid nights. The other ghost is of a soldier from the War of 1812. Legend has it that the young soldier fell in love with a Brown family cousin, left for war and never returned. His spirit is sometimes seen in the garden, looking into the living room of the Hall.

Activity Reported By: Family, staff and visitors

History: John Brown, Kentucky's first United States Senator, began construction on his home in 1796. When construction was substantially complete in 1800, Brown moved in with his wife and infant son, and he called Liberty Hall home for 41 years. The house was continuously occupied by a member of the Brown family until 1934. It was opened as a museum in 1937.
