Haunting Activity: When the Inn opened in 1987 there were numerous reports of spirits; however, the reports have decreased dramatically in recent years. The most frequently reported spirit is that of a little girl. She's most often seen playing with her jacks in front of the second floor elevator. "Anna," as she's been christened by the hotel staff is dressed in Victorian clothing, and she's also been known to play with dolls, as well as engage in an occasional game of hide-and-seek with hotel employees. Other ghosts include "John," a mischievous spirit who likes to awaken guests in the middle of the night by turning on the radio or TV at full volume, and a mysterious African-American gentleman who silently wanders around the laundry room, which was once the hospital's morgue, looking very sad. Guests on the third floor have been known to call the desk to complain about the party in the rooms above them as well guests pacing loudly upstairs. What they often don't realize is that the third floor is also the top one.
Activity Reported By: Staff and guests
History: Built in the historic Gratz Park district where Henry Clay's law offices and John Hunt Morgan's home were once located, this building opened in 1916 as the Lexington Clinic. The first medical clinic west of the Allegheny Mountains was three doctors' vision of the famed Mayo Clinic and remained in operation at this site until 1958. During its tenure as a hospital, the building housed several interesting individuals, including a man who had a stick stuck in his eye for fifteen years, the result of trying to escape the tax men who caught him distilling moonshine whiskey.
After the clinic moved to a new site, the building housed offices, including an engineering firm. However, it eventually fell into disrepair and stood empty from the late '70s to the mid-'80s, when its potential as a hotel was recognized. The Gratz Park Inn opened in 1987 with thirty-eight regular guest rooms, four junior suites and two luxury suites. The property also contains an elegant restaurant and is surrounded by peaceful gardens.
