Haunting Activity: Henry Wells, an African American man was arrested for reportedly burning the county courthouse in 1876. He was held in the attic of a building that was to become the new courthouse. On a February afternoon in 1878, a lynch mob gathered outside and demanded Wells be given over to them. A violent thunderstorm was fast approaching, and, as Wells gazed outside from his attic window at the expanding mob, lightening struck, killing Wells. The flash of light etched his expression into the window for all time, and nothing has been successful in removing his defiant expression.
