What's the difference between a paranormal investigation and a ghost hunt?
![]()
By Donna L. Marsh, APS Founder
While this question may be answered differently by each paranormal organization you query, the Adsagsona Paranormal Society has a set of guidelines they follow for all of their events.
An investigation is a carefully controlled research project, set up to collect evidence of suspected paranormal phenomenon or to record paranormal activity. It requires a professional attitude and dedication to detail and will require a minimum of two to three hours to complete, frequently occurring at night and sometimes going until the early morning hours. Occasionally, investigations require an overnight commitment. Team numbers are strictly limited. Full investigative protocol as set forth by the Adsagsona Paranormal Society will and must be followed. APS Investigations are closed events.
A hunt is an informal attempt to simply sight or record paranormal phenomenon in a location known to or similar to others known to produce paranormal activity. Time commitments and team numbers vary. While more loosely structured than an investigation, Adsagsona Paranormal Society's investigative protocol will be followed as applicable to the situation, with larger groups being split up into smaller teams in order to maximize participation. Hunts are limited or open events.
A social event is a gathering of friends, many of whom may be Adsagsona Paranormal Society members. Social events may be limited or open.
Closed events consist only of dues-paying members of the Adsagsona Paranormal Society in good standing. Closed events include, but may not be limited to, investigations.
Limited events consist of dues-paying members of the Adsagsona Paranormal Society and others by invitation. Limited events include, but may not be limited to, most hunts.
Open events consist of anyone interested in the paranormal. Open events include, but are not limited to, our bi-monthly meetings and workshops.
