Ghost Dogs
By Karen Smith Carr
Ghost dogs seem to find a niche in folklore around the world. Whether true or false, these tales have permeated the lore of almost every culture. Most often, they are seen as an omen or simply terrifying. But many have appeared to help those in distress or to warn of impending danger.
Many folks tell of a beloved pet that has saved them from disaster, even though the pet has long since passed to the other realm. This leads us to speculate, do dogs have souls? Are they able to return to warn those loved in their past lives, as many human ghosts have reportedly done??? One family tells of their beloved shepard who appeared to wake them from a deep sleep to warn them their house was ablaze. The pet had been gone for two years.
Other tales of ghost dogs have a more sinister background. Demon dogs have been reported as far away as the British Isles to as close to home as you can get, the South. These dogs often terrorize travelers on seldom traveled roads. They are often reported to be huge, looming, demonic beasts with feral red eyes. These are perhaps not actual ghost dogs, but manifestations of something more ... dark.
But the true appearance of a long past pet to its former owners makes one wonder, "Do dogs have the same earthly attachments as us humans?" Do they perhaps possess a soul not unlike our own? Animals encompass a significant percentage of apparitions sighted . These leads me to believe that animal hauntings deserve as much dedication to research as their human counterparts. It really makes one think about what makes one being possess a soul and why we as a whole think animals are souless creatures.
I think this definitely needs more investigation. Perhaps we will find that man's best friend is not all that different from us, with the same love and attachments to this world as we hold.
